KiwiRail and Centreport have partnered to deliver a streamlined online booking experience. CentreRail bookings can now be created on the KiwiRail Portal by Centreport customers. Centreport will manage the schedules as they do now. This new way of booking allows full visibility, live tracking, and has less manual work for everyone.
How to create a Centreport booking:
To get started making a Centreport booking, sign in to portal here, enter your account and click on the Create Booking button at the top right of the dashboard and follow the guide below.
Page 1 - Freight Details
The Freight Details page has 3 sections. As you complete each section, the next section will appear below it.
Customer Details
In the Customer Details section you’ll select the 4 parties that need to know about the booking:
The Booking Party: Who’s making the booking.
The Freight Payer: Who’s paying for the booking. Make sure you choose Centreport LTD.
Note: If Centreport LTD isn’t listed, contact them to add you to their account. KiwiRail can only grant access on CPL’s instructions.
The Sending Customer: Who’s sending the freight. Choose a previous sender from the list, or search for one:
The Receiving Customer: Who the freight’s going to. The list works the same as the sender.
💡
Did you know: There are two types of rail locations: CT (Container Terminal) or Siding (Private Siding).
A CT Site is one of KiwiRail’s 17 CT sites across the country where we load and discharge containerised freight. You can deliver and pick up your freight at our CT sites, or we can arrange a truck on your behalf.
A Siding is a privately owned and operated third-party site. The siding owner loads and unloads freight from our wagons and lets us know when the train is ready to go. Some examples of sidings are Centreport, Mainfreight Christchurch, and Toll Auckland.
If your site isn’t listed in the Sending Customer or Receiving Customer lists, you can type in the address and we’ll get it to the nearest CT site.
Shipping Details
In the Shipping Details section you’ll tell us the details we need know about the booking:
Freight Available Date - Arrive By Date: Let us know when your freight will be available at the origin, and when you need it at the destination. We’ll only show you services that meet these dates.
Customer Reference, Purchase Order/Notes, and Release Number are all optional fields you can enter to keep track on your booking. These references will show up on your invoice.
Import/Export: Select if the booking is for an import container or an export container. More information is required for these bookings, read the linked guides to learn more.
Equipment Details
In the Equipment Details section you’ll tell us about the equipment you want us to move:
There’s a lot of options here, so we’ll go through them top to bottom:
Category: Either Container or Wagon. CPL bookings only move Containers.
Equipment Type: Choose the type of Containers or Wagons you want to move.
KiwiRail Supplied: Tick this box if you want to hire our equipment. CPL do not use KiwiRail owned containers.
Quantity: How many of the equipment you want to move.
Net Weight: The net weight of the freight in the equipment.
Details: These are optional details you can add about the equipment like the equipment ID, different net weights per equipment, and any order specific order numbers you want to add.
Reefer: If you chose the Reefer Commodity Type you will need to give us the reefer details as well. We need to know the set temp of your container, and whether you need a generator or not.
If you want to add more equipment types to your booking (For example you want to move 20' containers and 40' containers in the same booking) you can click the Add Equipment button.
Once you’re happy with the equipment details, click Review & Book to go to the final page.

Once you’re happy with all of the details click Complete Booking to finalise your booking with KiwiRail.
Note that your booking isn’t complete unless you get a “Thank you! You have successfully created this booking” message like below:
Centreport Processes are written below for your reference. These processes were correct at time of writing (03/03/23).
Import Process
IMPORTS
Create all CentreRail import bookings on the KiwiRail Portal. Once you create your booking you will receive an unscheduled booking confirmation, and you will be able to view your booking on the Portal Dashboard.
Once the container arrives on port, CentreRail will assign the container to an available service 24 hours in advance using FIFO (first in first out). Once the container is scheduled you will be able to see the update in your dashboard, and you’ll also receive a confirmed booking confirmation.
Collect your import from the destination CT site using the KiwiRail booking reference. You can see the container’s live tracking on the portal.
Once your container has been devanned and is ready to be dehired, please email dehires@centreport.co.nz, with the following information:
Customer
Container #
Date Ready
Origin
Size
Detention Date
123 Limited
APZU1234567
Tuesday 28
Palmy
1 x 40
30/02/2023
CentreRail will schedule your empty back to the Port (checking that the container is approved to be dehired at CentrePort), and will reply with a scheduled booking number to drop the MT off to.
Note that all bookings that you drop off to need to be scheduled. KiwiRail no longer accepts deliveries to unscheduled bookings.
"as always, it is the shipper's responsibility to return containers for dehire within the free days allocated by the shipping line. Centreport Limited will not accept responsibility for containers accruing detention from any shipping line unless directly at fault”.
Export Process
Empty Export Containers
Create all empty container bookings ex the Port on the KiwiRail Portal. You will be given a date range to choose from, please ensure the day you require the empty container at the CT Site is the last day showing on your booking so CPL will have your container ready at the CT site. In the example below, you require the container to be collected on the 10th of March:
CPL will assign the container to an available service 24 hours in advance. The booking in your dashboard will show as scheduled and you will receive a booking confirmation with the confirmed dates.
Once a container has been assigned to your booking, CPL will email you the container number.
Loaded Export Containers
Create your loaded export bookings on the KiwiRail Portal at any time. Make sure your booking has the following details:
The first date in the date range should be when you will drop the export at the CT site. CPL will schedule based on this date (providing there is space available).
The last date in the date range should be prior to the ship cut. This helps CPL ensure the container is back at Port in time for the vessel.
Once the booking has been scheduled to a service, your dashboard will update and a confirmed booking confir will be emailed to you.
Some final notes about CPL bookings:
Once you create the booking you will not be able to edit it. Any changes can only be made by CPL. Contact them to request any changes.
Make sure you enter all the details you know so CPL know how to schedule your bookings.
If you’re have any issues with your booking, contact CPL. If you’re having any issues with the portal itself, contact KiwiRail.
We cannot grant access to Centreport’s account without their written permission. If you think you should have access to the CPL Freight Payer, please contact them directly.
