Booking Import Freight

KiwiRail works with 8 ports throughout New Zealand. We can import your containers to any of our CT sites, or deliver them straight to your door.

KiwiRail operates under the regulations of the Transitional Facility rules as outlined in Section 39 of the Biosecurity Act 1993. These rules mandate the implementation of AP (Authorised Person) checks on every import container upon arrival at the initial CT site.

The law necessitates that all import bookings are clearly designated as such to enable KiwiRail to conduct the required AP checks.

To comply with MPI’s regulations, please ensure the following information is included in your booking's shipping details:

  • Make sure the port knows that the containers are traveling on rail so they can discharge the import to the right area.

  • Select the "Import" option.

  • Select the shipping line from the list (Or enter one in).

  • Enter the vessel name and voyage number (Optional).

  • Make sure you provide the Container IDs in the equipment details.

The Container ID is the most important information when making an import booking.
We use the Container ID to communicate with the port so they know what to load on the train.

Because vessel schedules are highly variable, we don’t recommend scheduling your import to a rail service until you know that the container has cleared. If you schedule the import and it’s not ready to rail by the cutoff time for the service, you will still be charged for the capacity you reserved. Check out our Booking Change Surcharge guide here for more details.

You can always schedule your containers later once you have confirmation that they’re clear to enter the country. It’s free to add a schedule to an unscheduled container, see our Edit Booking Guide for more details.
