Booking Export Freight

KiwiRail works with 8 ports throughout New Zealand. We can get your export freight to these ports from any of our CT sites or your private siding.

Preadvising your export with the port is extremely important. If your container arrives at the port without a valid preadvise (commonly called a VGM or Verified Gross Mass), the port will not accept the container and will send it back on the wagon it traveled on. The container will return to the origin CT site, and you may miss your vessel.

This also means that we will lose capacity on the return trip from the port, which may take space we reserved for another customer’s import. The additional costs KiwiRail incurs from this will be on-charged to you.

To ensure a smooth journey for your export freight, it is essential to include the following information in the shipping details of your booking:

  • Select the "Export" option.

  • Select the shipping line from the list (Or enter one in).

  • Enter the vessel name and voyage number (Optional).

  • Specify the port cut-off date (Optional, but highly recommended).

  • Double check you have preadvised your export with the port.

Because vessel schedules are highly variable, there may be a time when a port cutoff time changes after you’ve made your booking. You can edit your booking up until the export has been checked-in to our network. See our Edit Booking Guide to see how to do that.
If you need to make any updates after your container is on our network, you’ll need to reach out to our Customer Delivery teams.
